2016 Lancer Evolution near Newark

If you're a die-hard car enthusiast who places speed and handling above all else in your next vehicle selection, you definitely need to put the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution at the top of your list. Especially since only a limited number of Final Edition Lancer Evos will be hitting U.S. soil as Mitsubishi phases out the pocket rocket from the market.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Final Edition Lancer Evolution is based off the current production GSR trim level from 2015. That means standard features include automated climate control, Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, cruise-control, a tilt-only steering wheel that's leather-wrapped, an audio system with six speakers and heated side rearview mirrors. Also standard are anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control systems, and front and front-side curtain airbags. There's also a driver knee airbag. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the standard Lancer, which the Evo is based off, four out of five stars in overall safety. The sedan also received the highest rating of "Good" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in several crash tests like roof strength and side impact.

For 2016, Mitsubishi designers and engineers fitted the Final Edition with advanced Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs, lightweight BBS alloy wheels, larger Brembo brakes and new Recaro seats.

Continuing to power the Evo is a 2.0-liter turbo-charged and intercooled four-cylinder engine. It received some modest performance upgrades compared to the outgoing model. It now churns out 303 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque. In comparison, last year's engine was rated at 283 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque, respectively.

A five-speed manual gearbox still delivers all the above power to the standard all-wheel-drive system. According to Edmunds, last year's GSR could hit 60 mph from a dead stop in 4.4 seconds; the Final Edition is expected to do the same or better. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in combined driving.*

The Final Edition is offered in pearl white, rally red, mercury gray and octane blue exterior colors. Gloss black accents can be found on the bumper and hood air outlets. The front grille is dark chrome. Inside the black interior, red stitching accents the seats, steering wheel, console lid, floor mats and e-brake handle. Finally, a badge denoting the production number (1-1600) rests on the console.
